Crosses in Aurora

AuroraShootingCrossesHemant Mehta (Friendly Atheist) makes a great point about the 12 crosses placed across the movie theater in Aurora, CO, where the recent mass murder occurred. Were all the victims Christian? What about the 6 year-old? How about their immediate families, the ones the crosses are supposed to be comforted by the crosses? Can we just assume that everybody is Christian all the time?

Many will find such questions insensitive. Hemant writes:
And if you think I’m being insensitive for even bringing this up, what would the reaction have been if someone put up Muslim or atheist symbols in their honor instead? Maybe there are better ways to honor the victims than by claiming them for your faith.
He's right.

It seems that Christians want the rest of us to believe that their cross is not a religious symbol when it is convenient for them. I do not buy this. Claiming that the cross is a universal symbol of anything (except perhaps the Christian religion) strikes me as yet another example of Christian privilege.
