Idiot of the Week: Rep. Todd Akin

Todd AkinI was not planning to write an Idiot of the Week post this week. Then I heard about Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) recent characterization of NBC's omission of "under god" during the pledge portion of their U.S. Open coverage. When this sort of idiocy drops in one's lap, it cannot be ignored. And in light of my last post, Rep. Akin's comments were too good not to share.

As I'm sure you recall, NBC cut the words "under god" from the pledge of allegiance during their U.S. Open coverage. They then apologized and admitted that their coverage was designed to push patriotism for reasons I still cannot comprehend. This was the context into which Rep. Akin saw fit to insert himself.

Here's what Rep. Akin had to say:
This was something that was done systematically, it was done intentionally, and is tremendously corrosive in terms of all of the values and everything that’s made America unique and such a special nation.
Editing his god out of the pledge is "corrosive" to America? Yep. And when asked why NBC might do such a thing, he responded with this gem:
Well, I think NBC has a long record of being very liberal and at the heart of liberalism really is a hatred for God and a belief that government should replace God. And so they’ve had a long history of not being at all favorable toward many of things that have been such a blessing to our country…This is a systematic effort to try to separate our faith and God, which is a source in our belief in individual liberties, from our country. And when you do that you tear the heart out of our country.
This man is an elected member of Congress, and part of his job brings him into regular contact with political liberals. How can he possibly work with them effectively if he is convinced that they hate his god? Wow!
