- David Silverman's (American Atheists) recent appearance on Brave Hero Radio with Justin Vacula is still making waves, as Silverman is receiving both praise and criticism for his behavior during the show.
- EllenBeth Wachs dropped a proverbial bomb in the form of a recent post on her blog, I Resign My Membership from Secular Woman. Some are likely shifting into damage control mode; others are hoping that Wachs will inspire other women who feel that they have been mistreated to come forward.
- The Board of Directors of the Center for Inquiry (CFI) released a statement following a meeting during which they discussed the controversy over CEO Ron Lindsay's opening remarks at Women in Secularism 2. The statement was immediately described as "a non-statement" by at least one blogger who writes on the Freethought Blogs network, and Twitter was soon buzzing with talk of boycotts.
- Ed Clint (Incredulous) is reporting that American Atheists is being sued for racial discrimination and wrongful termination. This one may not fall into the same category as the others in terms of "the great rift," but it is something else that will need to be addressed. Update: American Atheists has issued a response.
In the meantime, I'd like to point out that tempers are running particularly high right now for many reasons. Perhaps this is a good time to be both rational and constructive instead of seeking to throw fuel on the fire. Instead of tossing the CFI statement in the face of those now announcing plans to boycott CFI events, why not focus on thanking the Board for how they handled the situation? And instead of haranguing David Silverman for not denouncing what the treatment of EllenBeth by Freethought Blogs, how about letting EllenBeth know how much we appreciate her courage and fortitude? It seems like such an approach might accomplish more in the long-run.
