I've had an unusually busy week, making it difficult to follow everything going on in the news. However, there was one story I made time to follow: the debacle in Wisconsin. You see, as someone who works for the state, I tend to take it personally when state employees are attacked. This is especially true when the attack also happens to jeopardize public education. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) deserves Idiot of the Week recognition.
For those who have not been following this story, what you need to know is that there was a large budget surplus when Gov. Walker took office. He responded with deep tax cuts for businesses, leading to a projected deficit this year (except that there isn't actually a deficit). And Gov. Walker's cure for the imaginary budget woes? Union busting. Specifically, he's trying to abolish collective bargaining rights for most state employees.
It it becoming clear that this scenario was orchestrated to work this way. Gov. Walker has created an exaggerated crisis in order to attack workers' rights in his state.
There are now massive protests taking place in Madison, and Democrats in the state legislature are in hiding in order to deprive Walker from getting the vote he needs to pass this despicable measure. As information begins to surface showing that Gov. Walker's attempt to break unions is not even about the state budget, public opinion is against him, and even the local business community may be realizing that this is not the way to accomplish what they want.
Gov. Walker needs to be recalled by Wisconsin voters as soon as possible.
