I've often been envious of Canadians, and this gives me another reason to do so. According to this article in the Guelph Mercury about Christopher diCarlo, Statistics Canada reports that atheism is now the second-largest belief system (after Catholicism) in Canada. Evidently, the percent of Canadians identifying themselves as atheists climbed from 1% in 1971 to 16.3% in 2001. Granted, they still have a long way to go in throwing off the shackles of religious delusion, but they are moving in the right direction. Good news for Canada, and congratulations to diCarlo for winning Humanist of the Year.
