I've already expressed my opposition to Huckabee, but the more I learn about him, the worse he sounds. Now I learn that he insists that homosexuality is a choice, ignoring the body of scientific evidence which shows otherwise. He does not care about the science because his biases are religiously motivated. He's willing to turn his back on reality when it conflicts with his bigotry.
In addition to his willful denial of scientific evidence regarding human sexual orientation, Huckabee seeks to ban abortion and punish doctors who perform the procedure. Never mind that scientific evidence suggests that criminalization does not lower the rate of abortions, merely making the procedure more dangerous to the women who undergo it. If Huckabee wants to reduce the number of abortions performed, the science says he should work to keep it legal. Again we have a case where reality conflicts with Huckabee's religious beliefs, and again he chooses his faith.
I agree with the founders of my country that there should not be a religious test to hold office. However, the sort of religious extremism severe enough to lead one to willfully ignore scientific evidence in favor of superstition, bigotry, and delusion strikes me as more than sufficient to conclude that someone is not qualified to hold political office. Failing to do so endangers us all.
